Fire / Smoke Curtains Standard Fire / Smoke Curtains Specification Coated fibre-glass material tested to withstand temperatures of 600 Degrees Centigrade for one hour. The thickness of the Smoke Curtain is approximately 0.75mm. Bottom Rail and Roller A bottom rail is attached to the curtain and this rail is designed to stop at ceiling level or into a recess in the box when raised. The curtain coils on to a steel roller mounted on endplate bearings. The box is galvanised as standard and can be polyester powder coated at extra cost. Smoke Curtain Operation Smoke curtains are electrically operated by 240V Tubular Motors and are supplied with a control panel that is connected to the main fire alarm panel for the area. Standard control panel will operate a single motor or alternatively a group panel can be supplied to manage multiple motors within a single smoke compartment. The system requires a 240V single phase fused spur within one metre of the control panel. Failsafe Operation In the event of power failure, the curtains will automatically close by gravity with a controlled descent. Additionally on receipt of a signal from the fire alarm panel, the curtains will failsafe close by gravity and open automatically when the fire signal ceases. The Double Skin Insulated Lath offers additional heat radiation protection.   Fire / smoke curtains Fire Products Structural Recommendation The structure supporting the rolling door-set must be a fire resistant separating element (to B.S. 476: part 20,21,22: 1987), having a fire resistance greater or equal to that required of the door-set itself. It must be capable of supporting the door-set for the required fire resistance period without compromising the fire performance of the door-set. In addition, consideration must be given to the loads imposed by the various door-set components, i.e. endplates and barrel support brackets. It is recommended, that a critical temperature of 400 0C and steel sections with an Hp/A value below 230m 1 are used for designing fire resistant steel supporting sections. Where fire/smoke curtains are fixed to masonry supporting elements, the masonry elements must be capable of providing a fire resistance in terms of the insulation, integrity and load bearing capacity criteria of B.S. 476: Part 21: 1987 equal to or greater than the fire resistance rating (integrity) of the rolling shutter assembly. Fire / smoke curtains fitted to a timber stud partition / steel framed partition are acceptable for up to 60 minutes fire resistance, to the tested opening size of 2750mm wide X 3250 high and above sizes subject to construction.. The surface/sill onto which the shutter closes must be composed of non-combustible material. All openings must be capable of carrying the weight of the fire / smoke curtains and be equal or greater than the fire resistance of the fire smoke /curtains assembly's. All fire / smoke curtains weights are indicated on the approval drawings. Optional Safety Bearings (Fire / Smoke Curtains) Risk Assessment Effectively if the sole intended use of the shutter is as a fire/ smoke curtains i.e. the shutter will be in the closed position, or, it will remain in the open position and close only under fire conditions then a safety bearing would not be required. We can provide re-settable safety bearings that have been tested to EN12604, EN 12605 and comply with the anti fall back regulation. Please note you have a legal requirement to regularly maintain all fire rated equipment. Under the regulatory reform (Fire Safety) order 2005 there is an obligation to ensure testing in accordance with BS5588-12. Fire Alarm Requirements Tube motor fire shutter - The relay provided by Westwood Security Shutters Ltd requires a normally open volt free signal going closed on fire. Conventional fire shutter - The solenoid unit requires a 24volt D.C. signal (0.5 amps on activation). Audio Visual unit - Requires a normally open volt free signal going closed on fire. Fire Curtains - Require a normally closed signal going open on fire (fail safe system).
