Have used Westwood shutters for a few years, very friendly, and a fantastic customer service. The motor to the front entrance shutter to school broke, they were here within an hour, cut open the shutter and everybody got into school on time. I highly recommend Westwood to everybody for any roller shutter work.

About Reading

Reading, located in Berkshire, UK, is a dynamic town known for its rich historical heritage, thriving commercial activity, vibrant cultural scene, and active sporting community.

Reading’s history dates back to the 8th century when it was founded as a Saxon settlement. The town gained prominence in the medieval period, particularly with the establishment of Reading Abbey in 1121 by Henry I, who is buried there. The Abbey became one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in medieval England. The dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century led to the Abbey’s decline, but its ruins remain a key historical landmark.

The town experienced significant growth during the Industrial Revolution, becoming a major center for manufacturing, particularly in the brewing and baking industries. Huntley & Palmers, once the world’s largest biscuit manufacturer, was based in Reading. The arrival of the Great Western Railway in the 19th century further spurred the town’s development, making it a crucial transportation hub.

Today, Reading boasts a diverse and thriving economy. It is a major commercial center, particularly known for its strong technology sector. The town is often referred to as the “Silicon Valley of the UK” due to the presence of numerous multinational tech companies, including Microsoft, Oracle, and Hewlett-Packard, which have their UK headquarters in the town. Reading’s business parks, such as Green Park and Thames Valley Park, are hubs for innovation and enterprise.

The retail sector is also robust, with the Oracle Shopping Centre and Broad Street Mall offering a wide range of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. The town center combines high-street brands with independent boutiques, creating a vibrant shopping environment. Reading’s strategic location along the M4 corridor and excellent rail links to London make it an attractive location for businesses and commuters.

Sport plays a significant role in Reading’s community life. Reading FC, known as “The Royals,” is the town’s main football club, competing in the English Football League Championship. The club plays its home matches at the Madejski Stadium, which also hosts rugby union team London Irish.

The town supports a variety of other sports, including rowing, which is particularly popular on the River Thames. The Reading Rowing Club has a long history and is one of the oldest rowing clubs in the UK. Cricket enthusiasts can enjoy matches at the Reading Cricket Club, and the town offers facilities for athletics, swimming, and hockey at venues like Palmer Park Sports Stadium and Reading Hockey Club.

Reading offers several attractions that reflect its rich cultural and historical heritage. The Reading Museum, located in the town hall, provides insights into local history, including the Bayeux Tapestry replica and exhibits on the Abbey’s history. The Abbey Ruins and the Forbury Gardens are picturesque spots for exploring Reading’s medieval past.

For art lovers, the Hexagon Theatre and South Street Arts Centre offer a variety of performances, from drama and comedy to music and dance. The nearby Thames Valley and the Berkshire countryside provide scenic beauty and opportunities for outdoor activities.

Reading’s nightlife is lively and diverse, catering to a range of tastes. The town center is home to numerous pubs, bars, and restaurants, particularly around Friar Street and Gun Street. Popular spots include The Alehouse, known for its selection of real ales, and Lola Lo, a vibrant tiki bar.

Live music is a significant part of Reading’s cultural scene, with the town famously hosting the annual Reading Festival, one of the UK’s largest and most popular music festivals. Smaller venues like Sub89 and the Purple Turtle offer live performances and DJ nights throughout the year.

Reading is a town that beautifully blends historical significance with modern vibrancy. From its medieval roots and industrial heritage to its thriving commercial activity and diverse cultural attractions, Reading offers a rich and engaging experience for residents and visitors alike. The town’s active sporting community, scenic beauty, and lively nightlife make it a standout destination in the heart of Berkshire.
