Have used Westwood shutters for a few years, very friendly, and a fantastic customer service. The motor to the front entrance shutter to school broke, they were here within an hour, cut open the shutter and everybody got into school on time. I highly recommend Westwood to everybody for any roller shutter work.

About Runcorn

Runcorn, located in Cheshire, UK, is a town known for its industrial heritage, vibrant commercial activity, scenic landscapes, and active sporting community.

Historical Make-up

Runcorn’s history dates back to the early medieval period when it was a small settlement. The town’s name is believed to derive from “Rumcofan,” meaning a wide cove or bay. The construction of Halton Castle in the 11th century marked Runcorn’s early significance as a defensive stronghold. The town grew steadily through the centuries, with its development accelerating during the Industrial Revolution. The completion of the Bridgewater Canal in 1776 and the later Manchester Ship Canal transformed Runcorn into a crucial hub for transport and industry, particularly in chemicals and manufacturing.

Today, Runcorn boasts a diverse economy with strengths in manufacturing, logistics, and services. The town’s strategic location along the River Mersey and its excellent transport links, including the M56 motorway and the West Coast Main Line, make it an attractive location for businesses. Major chemical companies like INEOS and Johnson Matthey have significant operations in the town, continuing its industrial legacy.

Retail is also a key sector, with Runcorn Shopping City (now known as Runcorn Shopping Centre) providing a range of shops, restaurants, and services. The Halton Lea district is another commercial hub, offering additional shopping and leisure options. Runcorn’s economy is supported by various business parks and industrial estates, which host a mix of local enterprises and multinational corporations.

Sport plays an important role in Runcorn’s community life. The town is home to Runcorn Linnets FC, a football club that competes in the Northern Premier League Division One West and plays its home matches at the APEC Taxis Stadium. Rugby league is also popular, with the Runcorn ARLFC providing opportunities for players of all ages.

For those interested in water sports, the nearby River Mersey and the Bridgewater Canal offer opportunities for rowing, sailing, and fishing. The Runcorn Rowing Club is a key institution for rowing enthusiasts. The town also has excellent facilities for athletics, swimming, and fitness at the Runcorn Swimming Pool and the Brookvale Recreation Centre.

Runcorn offers several attractions that reflect its rich cultural and historical heritage. Halton Castle, though largely in ruins, provides a glimpse into the town’s medieval past and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. Norton Priory Museum and Gardens is another significant historical site, featuring the remains of a medieval abbey and beautiful gardens.

For nature lovers, the nearby Runcorn Hill Park and the Wigg Island Community Park offer scenic walking trails, wildlife observation, and outdoor activities. The Silver Jubilee Bridge, an iconic structure connecting Runcorn and Widnes, is a notable landmark and a testament to the town’s engineering heritage.

Runcorn’s nightlife is varied and welcoming, with a range of pubs, bars, and restaurants catering to different tastes. The town center and areas like Old Town Runcorn offer several traditional pubs, such as The Ferry Boat and The Grapes, which are known for their friendly atmospheres and live music events. For those seeking a more contemporary experience, the nearby Trident Park features modern bars and eateries.

Live entertainment can be enjoyed at venues like The Brindley Theatre, which hosts a variety of performances, including theatre, comedy, and music. The town also has a vibrant cultural scene, with events such as the Runcorn Canal Boat Rally adding to its dynamic community life.

Runcorn is a town that beautifully blends historical significance with modern vibrancy. From its medieval roots and industrial heritage to its thriving commercial activity and diverse cultural attractions, Runcorn offers a rich and engaging experience for residents and visitors alike. The town’s active sporting community, scenic beauty, and lively nightlife make it a standout destination in Cheshire.
